It is with heavy hearts that we announce
the passing of Eben Frederick Lennox, age
95, of Amherst, NS, formally of River Hebert, NS, who passed away
peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at the Northumberland Regional
Health Care Centre, Pugwash, NS.
He was a son of the late Archibald
"Archie" and Kathleen Adele (Shipley) Lennox.
Eben was a graduate of the Provincial
Normal College, class of 1949 -1950. His first school was Beaverbank,
Colchester County, followed by two years in Harrison Settlement,
Cumberland County. Then began his 30 years in River Hebert teaching
geography to all students at River Hebert District High. To this day
he still received warm comments of useful knowledge and good times
shared there.
In 1950 he was granted a license to
preach. He conducted worship services in many churches in his own home
area of River Hebert, Joggins, Maccan and further afield in the
county. In addition to his service in the pulpit, his home church of
River Hebert Baptist saw him serve God as deacon for over 50 years. He
was a long time choir member and led a vibrant youth group. He was
always available whatever the need.
During vacation periods he enjoyed
traveling to many areas of Canada and the USA, covering all provinces
and 2/3 of the states, including Hawaii. During one trip he traveled
to southwest Europe. This trip especially, and all the others were
very helpful to him in his
teaching.
He supported his profession, serving as
president of the local branch of the NSTU for a period of time. A
lasting legacy provided us by Eben was this penning of the oral
history of River Hebert Head, his home and an area that supported five
sawmills, one of which had the largest output of any mill in the
province in the early 1900's. This knowledge of homes, businesses,
churches, and more would be lost without his
effort.
Eben leaves to mourn his sister Annie
(Bradley) Ripley, Moncton, NB and his cousin Alice Lees, Egerton, NS
and their families.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased
by his wife Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" Stevenson in
2019.
Arrangements are under the care and
direction of the Jones Family Funeral
Centre, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS where visitation
will take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026 from 1:30 until 2 PM, followed
immediately by his funeral service at 2 PM, Rev. Jeff White
officiating.
Donations in memory of Eben can be made
to the River Hebert Latta Cemetery or a charity of your
choice.
Special thanks to the staff of the
Cumberland and the Northumberland Regional Health Care Centres for
their excellent care of Eben.
