Andrew Wylie Moore passed away peacefully on September 28, 2022 in Amherst.

Born in Linden, NS he was the youngest son of Wylie and Grace (Mitchell) Moore.   He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was a kind and generous man and a friend to many people over his lifetime.

Andy’s pride and joy was family.  With an amazing wife, life and business partner, Inez was his rock and they shared 64 years of marriage before her passing in 2019.  He dearly missed Inez and wanted to be with her every day since then.  They loved spending time at the camp at Angevine Lake and family gatherings there were usually epic events (not mentioning any names).  In Amherst their kitchen was almost always open and there was always room for more at the table. Impromptu and unexpected parties were the favourite.  Inez would say we were full to the rafters, but come on in.  Their pets were their travelling companions in those days and they went nearly everywhere together and never had an unloved moment.  It was a family joke that if anyone should die, their best bet might be to come back to the Moore household as a dog or cat.

Andy could recount ridiculous amounts of family history on his own family and he and Inez spent many good times digging for connections with ancestors.  There probably wasn’t a cemetery in the region that they didn’t go through more than once to put a name on a missing or unknown relative, a practice that took them back generations of information.  That digging also took them to Northern Ireland in the 1990s to find more of the story of when one brother got on the boat and one stayed put.  Together, they always found a way to put the puzzle pieces together and would give a history lesson in a moment’s notice.

Andy spent his whole life to support his growing family.  Starting in the 1950s, he worked at the T Eaton Company in Moncton in shipping and receiving and proud of his first paycheque of $65.  Closer to home in the early 1960s he starting working in the parts department of Tantramar Motors in downtown Amherst.  From there he worked for Graham Smith as parts manager where he was awarded many sales achievements including trips to Hawaii and Portugal.  He loved taking Inez on these trips and reminisced about them many times.  In the 1980s he worked for Taylor Ford Moncton and Bill Casey Ford Amherst and helped to establish a successful wholesale auto parts business for these companies and created a benchmark on how to succeed in this business in Amherst area and Cumberland County.  In 1991, when some would be considering retirement, Andy decided to go into business with two of his sons, Dana and James purchasing a small tire and alignment shop in Amherst known as Donkin Tire.   Thirty years have passed since then and for all of those years he was instrumental in guiding and building Moore Automotive and Recreation.

Andy was a talented singer and loved to sing in church choirs, as a soloist, or just because.  In the 1970s he took piano lessons so he could learn to read music which might have been a stretch, but it led him to the local Barbershop chorus where he truly found his spot and many lifelong singing friends, among them Paul Landry, Don Helm, Con Murray, Carl Merlin, Bill Brown, Jack Atkinson, Arnold Blenkhorn and so many others, all of whom would break into song at any given moment even if no one asked them to.

He went on to direct the Sounds of Cumberland Barbershop Chorus for more than 10 years, performing in competitions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  No one remembers if they ever won top awards, but they sang beautifully because they could and they had snappy outfits.   At one point there were more than thirty men in the chorus and they were well known and respected in the Barbershop singing community.   In later life Andy sang with The Travellers for several years performing throughout Cumberland County at nursing homes, church events and family gatherings.

Andy is survived by children Marion (Richard), Harry (Joe), Dana (Ann), James (Shelly) and Gordon (Shey), grandchildren Ashley (Aaron), Mia (Jon), Cassandra (Kent), Emmett, Matt, Wylie, Kailey and Michael, great- grandchildren Mitchell, Rowan, Ruby, Fletcher and Bowen as well as sisters Gerry Crockett and Edith (John) Weeks.   He was predeceased by his wife Inez (nee Webster) in 2019.

The family is very grateful for the care and good humour provided by Dr Krys Bienkowski over the years and the doctors and nursing staff at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre during his time there.   We are also deeply grateful to Nancy Patterson for her friendship, compassion and expertise which allowed Andy to stay in his own home this past year.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). To honour and celebrate both Andy and Inez, the family invites to you join us to share a story or a photo at Jones Family Funeral Centre on Monday, October 3rd from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.  Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 4th at 2pm at the funeral home as well.
