It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Roderick George Ogden, age 80, originally of Amherst, NS. Rod passed away on 21 February 2021, in the Palliative Care Ward of the Colchester East Hants Health Center in Truro with family at his side.

Born in Moncton, NB, he was the son of the late George and Violet (Cole) Ogden.

For over 40 years Rod and his wife Peggy shared their love and lives together. With their two children, some of their best memories were made in their family home in Warren. Countless more came from numerous road trips and camping adventures to places like Newfoundland, Fundy Nat’l Park and PEI with family and friends. For many years Rod worked in retail as manager of both the Amherst and River Hebert Co-op stores. Armed with this experience, he later bought a local wholesale business that he and Peggy successfully ran until their retirement. They could often be found traveling the countryside together delivering everything from cookies and cards to porcelain dolls to corner stores and pharmacies. Following retirement Rod enjoyed many outdoor activities including golf, fishing and gardening, while ending most days gossiping with friends at one of the local coffee stops. When the effects of Rod’s Parkinson’s disease began to take a heavier toll, he finally agreed to move to Truro to be closer to family.  Although leaving his hometown and many good friends was difficult, dad loved being closer to his grandchildren and quickly began to enjoy the increased family visits, his Sunday crêpe brunches and back road drives searching for deer and geese. Dad also forged close relationships with many of the staff of both Parkland and Cedarstone who he delighted in teasing and giving a hard time in general.

Dad will be dearly missed by his children Jeff and daughter-in-law Katherine Ogden (Truro); Susan Ogden (Dartmouth); his grandchildren Ryan and Jennifer Mersey and Noah and Jacob Ogden; his brother Manford Ogden (Fredericton) and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased but his wife Peggy Oulton; brother Garnet Ogden and sister Myrna O’Meara.

Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777), from where visitation will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 12 pm until the time of the funeral at 2 pm. Burial will take place in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.
